The Linux Foundation announced the formation of the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) in April 2026, bringing together the three most widely adopted open-source projects in the AI agent ecosystem under neutral governance.

Founding projects:

  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) — from Anthropic. The standard for connecting AI models to external tools, with 10,000+ published servers
  • goose — from Block (Square's parent). An open-source AI agent framework for developer productivity
  • AGENTS.md — from OpenAI. A specification format for describing AI agent capabilities in a machine-readable way
  • 💡 When Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Salesforce all become supporting members of the same foundation, the protocol stops being a vendor's project and becomes industry infrastructure.

Why neutral governance matters: Moving these projects under the Linux Foundation means multi-stakeholder governance with vendor-neutral decision making — similar to how Linux kernel governance works. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Salesforce are initial supporting members.

For businesses building on MCP: the open governance structure reduces the risk of the standard fragmenting or being abandoned by its original sponsor. This is the infrastructure layer that will define how enterprise AI systems communicate over the next decade.
