Israel’s Ministry of Tourism Bets Big on AI to Reinvent the Travel Experience

Israel’s Tourism Ministry is rolling out a government-backed strategy to integrate artificial intelligence across the sector, from an innovation community co-hosted at Google Israel to generative-AI tours and a $6.5 million North American campaign. The initiative aims to boost revenues, personalize visitor experiences, and position the country as a testbed for AI-driven tourism.

Israel’s Ministry of Tourism Bets Big on AI to Reinvent the Travel Experience

Israel’s Ministry of Tourism is no longer content with just marketing its beaches and holy sites. Instead, it is betting the future of its travel industry on artificial intelligence — a coordinated push that includes a new AI innovation community, a generative-AI project called “Talking Tourism,” and a $6.5 million campaign targeting North America. The strategy, outlined in a policy paper titled *“Artificial Intelligence in the Tourism Sector in Israel,”* explicitly states that AI can increase revenues from inbound and domestic tourism, boost demand, and support new tourism products. Minister Haim Katz has called technology “not just a work tool, but a central economic growth engine” for the sector.

What happened

At the heart of the effort is an AI innovation community for tourism, launched at an event held at Google Israel’s offices. The community brings together senior tourism executives, technology companies, and academic institutions. Director-General Michael Itzhakov publicly presented the steps being advanced: the creation of the innovation community, development of a national AI policy for tourism, and acceleration of technology deployment in Ministry services. The goal is to “implement Artificial Intelligence solutions that will redefine how tourists explore the country,” according to the Ministry.

💡 The strategy marks a shift from traditional destination marketing to a data-driven, experience-first approach, leveraging Israel’s “Startup Nation” DNA to reinvent tourism.

The flagship project is “Talking Tourism,” a generative-AI system that will let tourists at selected sites scan QR codes to access immersive, personalized narratives. Unlike standard audio guides, the AI adapts the story to the visitor’s interests and language, making historical heritage “contemporary, understandable and vivid” for travelers from all over the world. The Ministry says it will support multiple languages, improving accessibility for international visitors.

Beyond physical sites, the Ministry also unveiled HolyLandTravel.ai, an AI-driven platform aimed at the global Christian community, to help plan pilgrimage trips. It was announced at the International Mediterranean Tourism Market (IMTM) in Tel Aviv, as part of a broader recovery campaign. The Ministry also launched a $6.5 million strategic investment in North America under the banner “I AM ISRAEL,” designed to show the country remains “open, vibrant, and deeply welcoming.” Visitor data cited in the same context shows entries in the first part of 2026 have already doubled compared with the previous year, signaling a strong recovery.

Why it matters

Israel’s tourism industry has endured two years of geopolitical difficulties. The AI push is part of a comprehensive recovery strategy, but it also positions the country at the forefront of a global trend. Israel launched a national AI program in August 2023 to promote AI integration across sectors, and tourism is now one of the focus areas. The Ministry’s policy paper lists potential applications that go far beyond marketing: smart information services at tourism sites, congestion-management tools, interactive experiences, and personalized tours with real-time content based on location and interests. There is also a plan for systematic data-driven analysis of tourist satisfaction and behavior.

💡 If Israel executes this strategy effectively, it could become a laboratory for AI-driven tourism, offering a blueprint for other countries looking to modernize their travel sectors.

The private sector is already moving. Kishrey Teufa Group, an Israeli travel company, announced a partnership with VibeTrip, an AI travel-tech firm, to integrate a smart AI chatbot into its website and internal systems. Later stages will add smart search, personalized vacation packages, and AI-supported booking tools. The companies describe the goal as making travel planning “more intuitive, precise and accessible.”

What it means for business

For tourism operators, startups, and even tour guides, the implications are immediate. The Ministry has discussed AI training for guides, indicating that human guides will need to upskill to work alongside AI tools. The innovation community will serve as a platform for entrepreneurs and startups to collaborate with tourism stakeholders, aligned with AI expansion plans for 2026. The Ministry’s policy paper explicitly states that AI will “significantly improve tourists’ experience in Israel and increase their satisfaction.”

💡 Tour guides, travel agencies, and hospitality businesses that embrace AI tools — from chatbots to personalized itineraries — will have a competitive advantage in delivering efficient, tailored services.

The economic impact is expected to be significant: AI is identified as a tool to increase tourism revenues, encourage more visits, and support new tourism products that add value to the national economy. The Ministry expects AI to strengthen the competitiveness of Israel’s tourism offering and make the sector more efficient.

What to watch next

The rollout of Talking Tourism at selected sites will be the first real test of whether generative AI can enhance the on-site visitor experience. The expansion of the innovation community and the success of the HolyLandTravel.ai platform will also be key indicators. Meanwhile, the $6.5 million North American campaign will show whether AI-powered marketing can shift traveler perceptions. If the numbers hold — visitor entries doubling — the strategy could become a model for other destinations. The broader national AI program, launched in August 2023, provides the policy backbone, and tourism is now its most visible showcase.
